A Brief History of Dungeons & Dragons

A Brief History of Dungeons & Dragons

  • by Neil O'Sullivan

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a fantasy role-playing game (FPG) that was first released in 1974 by Gary Gygax. In 1997, it was bought by the Wizards of the Coast studio. After its release, it attracted worldwide popularity instantly, which resulted in the creation of many D&D books, TV shows, miniature figures, and even movies.

Today, it has evolved with time and several changes have been made in terms of its rules and figures. What sets D&D apart from other similar games is that it allows the players to create or design their own characters as they like. Then these characters enter a fantasy world where they perform different tasks assigned to them. There is a Dungeon Master (DM) that acts as the game storyteller.

Different characters team up and work together. Then they interact with other inhabitants and solve puzzles, while exploring and battling in their fantasy world. Each character earns scores based on its performance, which helps the player reach a higher level.

The original D&D is the foundation of today’s D&D and many other similar games. Even after over thirty years since the original game was released, it is still growing in popularity. Its characters have evolved and have become more advanced. People explore their creative minds to come up with different and exciting character ideas, which is one of the game’s main attractions. The player can choose whether they will be a human, dwarf, or even an elf. Then they can also give it a class based on its role (like a fighter, wizard, etc.).

D&D miniatures and pieces are also popular among D&D players. They find this hobby of collecting different miniatures very appealing. Miniature manufacturers have been using different technologies to help D&D players get the miniatures that they want. Initially, the die-cast technique was used to design them. Then with time, moulded plastic miniatures became popular because of the detail they provided. Now with the advent of 3D printing, 3D miniatures are dominating the market.
